UBC 8, Biola 6

Mitch Grossell - photo by Susan GeissThis tournament is being played in a smaller ballpark than Nat Bailey Stadium, but the Thunderbirds did what they had to do to start the tournament with a big win.

Eric Brown got the start. He was lit up for a couple of home runs (bringing in four runs) in the first inning, but  he ended up going six innings, allowed only one more run, eight hits, and struck out three. Dan Britton-Foster pitched two innings, allowed one run on two hits, and got the win. Shawn Hetherington pitched a hitless ninth inning.

The offensive highlights were home runs by SS Sammie Starr and pinch-hitter Mitch Grossell. Grossell's home run came in the eighth inning, with DH Bob Foerster on base, and Foerster scored the winning run. Starr was 3-4 with a triple and two RBI for the game. 2B Alex White was 2-5 with two doubles and and two RBI.

Grossell hit a pinch-hit home run in the win over Oregon Tech a week ago, and got a pinch-hit single against Cal State San Marcos the next day.
