RF Mike Styrna hit a grand-slam home run over the left-field fence in the fifth inning to win it for the Thunderbirds.
The Birds got another good performance from a starter. This time it was Eric Brown, who went 5 2/3 innings, and held the Cavaliers to three runs on six hits. Kurtis Schumacher and Andrew LaFleur made relief appearances.
The Cavaliers started the scoring in the top of the first with two runs on RBI by 3B Casey McLeod and DH Sam McCormick. The Birds answered with a run in the bottom of the first, then took the lead in the fourth inning when 1B Ryan Pilgrim came in on a error and C Ben Torrie hit an RBI single.
The Birds loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fifth, on a hit by SS Sammie Starr, a walk by CF Jon Syrnyk, and 3B Fletcher Vynne reaching on an error. Pilgrim drew a walk to bring in a run, then Styrna hit the first pitch over the fence.
Brown got the win for the Thunderbirds, Ben Rue got the loss. Pilgrim was 2-2 with two RBI, and Starr was 2-5.
