This game was close for the first five innings, but the Thunderbirds broke it open with five runs in the sixth. After that, Dave Pasquali took over from starter Brad Ashman, and pitched three shutout innings, allowing only two hits. Jeff Tobin pitched a shutout ninth. Ashman got the win.

There were a lot of offensive highlights for the Thunderbirds. Johnny Yiu got an RBI on a bunt. In the fourth inning, Jeff Tobin got caught between first and second on a pickoff attempt, but Tobin was able to extend the rundown and give Richard Smythe the opportunity to steal home. Tobin also had a 2-RBI double, and Smythe had a couple of hits and an RBI. Tyler Hughes had an RBI double.

The big sixth inning included Coyote starter Charlie Strandlund being hit in a shin by a hard line drive by Mark Capone. Strandlund had to turn the ball over to Joey Zubizarreta, but was able to stay in the game as the DH. It wasn't one of Strandlund's better days. He gave up eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. At the plate, his only hit was an RBI double. He hit a couple of other balls a long way, but UBC outfielders were able to get under them.

Story from UBC Athletics site: T-Birds down Coyotes; will face them again in Region 1 final.

The day's highlight was the first elimination game. Oregon Tech defeated Concordia-Portland 1-0. Both pitchers, Corey Merritt for Oregon Tech and Mike Allen for Concordia, went the distance in a game that took only one hour and 42 minutes to play. The only run of the game, which was unearned, was batted in by Scott Gelhardt in the seventh inning. Merritt gave up only three hits, Allen allowed seven, and struck out seven. Box score and play-by-play.

Albertson defeated Oregon Tech 7-6 in the second elimination game of the day.
