So, Dave Pasquali came in with the bases loaded, and got the job done; he got Jason Mortenson to hit a double-play ball. Problem was, shortstop Tyler Hughes bobbled it, and instead of being out of the inning, the Hustlin' Owls had tied the game. The Hustlin' Owls got two more runs off a double by Ryan Wilson, and they could have gotten more, but the Oregon Tech half of the inning ended with a great catch by Adam Campbell in left field, followed by a great throw to the plate that nailed a baserunner to get the third out.
The Thunderbirds got a run back in the eighth, on a sacrifice fly by Steve Bell-Irving. The should have gotten more, but Owl reliever Anthony Baca got a key strikeout of Chris Ames, then Adam Campbell was caught stealing to end the inning. The Thunderbirds also had baserunners on the ninth, but the Hustlin' Owls got a game-ending double play.
A share of credit for Oregon Tech's win also goes to starter John Jefferson. Jefferson allowed seven hits in seven innings, but he put the Hustlin' Owls in a situation where the big seventh inning was enough to win the game for them.
The second game, which was non-conference, was entertaining in a different way. The Thunderbirds used seven pitchers in seven innings, and the only one who allowed any runs was John Stempfle, who gave up two runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings. (Stempfle was the only UBC pitcher who went more than one inning.) Andrew LaFleur gave up the only other Owl hit. Jordy McNiven, Ryan Ormerod, Andy Herman, and Pat Smith pitched hitless innings. It was Ormerod's first appearance of the season, and Smith's first home appearance.
However, the pitching highlight came in the top of the seventh, with two out. Chris Ames came on for the first pitching appearance of his career. He faced one batter, and struck him out to end the game.
The offensive highlights were a triple and an RBI by Conner Janes (playing third base instead of first), three hits and two RBI by Johnny Yiu, and RBI by Tyler Willson and Ian Prescott.
